The DMCA does not allow you to circumvent copy protection, so if a recording company placed any software on their disk to prevent you from making an MP3 of it you would not be legally allowed to convert that particular disk. Otherwise iTunes and every other program would not allow you to rip music from a CD. So from that standpoint, it is NOT illegal to make MP3's from CD's that you purchased.
